Christmas words in Spanish, ranked by films
Here are 92 Christmas words in Spanish, each with its article, its English meaning and how often Spanish film and television subtitles say it, from la familia and el regalo down to el espumillón, tinsel, and el roscón. They are grouped by theme: the season, decorations, the nativity, Father Christmas, presents, food and drink, winter, church and the verbs of the holidays. For how to say Merry Christmas and wishes to write in a card, see Merry Christmas in Spanish; this page is the vocabulary.
How to read the tables
- # is the word’s place in this page’s own ranking of all 92 words, so you can compare across tables: 1 is the most said.
- Per million words is how many times the word is said in a million words of subtitles, singular and plural together. The collection is about 423 million words of dialogue.
- Rank in all Spanish is where the word’s main form (the singular, unless the word lives in the plural) stands among every word in the Spanish subtitles, from que and de downwards. The lower the number, the more common the word.
- The count also includes is the honest part. A count is of the word, every meaning together, not of Christmas talk: estrella is any star, film stars too, and cena is dinner on every night of the year.

What the ranking shows, and what it cannot:
- The top of the list is ordinary words. Ten of the words on this page are among the thousand commonest in Spanish subtitles, and Navidad, at 925, is the only one of them that means Christmas. The other nine, from familia to iglesia, are words for the whole year.
- A present is talked about more than Christmas itself. Regalo is said 1.2 times as often as Navidad, though regalo also counts "I give" and every birthday present.
- The most said word that only means Christmas is Navidad. Among the words whose other meanings are rare or missing (Navidad, navideño, Nochebuena, villancico, muérdago, mirra, turrón, espumillón, Adviento, roscón and polvorón), Navidad leads by far and navideño comes second.
- Mistletoe beats turrón. Muérdago is said 2.8 times as often as turrón, and pavo, turkey, is said 68.8 times as often as turrón. Most of these subtitles are translations of English-language films and series, so this is the Christmas of Hollywood in Spanish, not the Christmas of Madrid or Mexico City.
- The Spanish sweets are barely there. Turrón, mazapán, roscón and polvorón are all under one per million; thirteen words on the page are.
- Árbol is the tree. Árbol is said 13.3 times as often as pino, pine, and pino 7.1 times as often as abeto, fir.
The collection also mixes subtitles from Spain and Latin America, so it cannot say which words belong to which side of the Atlantic.
El or la: gender patterns in the Christmas words
Every Spanish noun is masculine or feminine, and the article tells you which. The Christmas words follow the usual patterns:
- Most nouns ending in -o are masculine: el regalo, el pavo, el reno, el trineo, el adorno.
- Most nouns ending in -a are feminine: la estrella, la vela, la campana, la cena, la galleta, la bufanda. One exception on the list: el cava, the sparkling wine, is masculine. La cava is a wine cellar.
- -dad and -ción are feminine: la Navidad, la oración, and with them la felicidad and la decoración.
- Other endings must be learned word by word: el árbol, el ángel, el turrón, el calcetín, el belén are masculine; la nieve, la paz, la luz, la mirra are feminine.
- People change the ending: el pastor, la pastora.
And the plurals:
- Add -s after a vowel, -es after a consonant: el regalo, los regalos; el árbol, los árboles; el ángel, los ángeles.
- A final -z becomes -c: la luz, las luces; la nuez, las nueces.
- A written accent on the last syllable disappears: el turrón, los turrones; el calcetín, los calcetines; el mazapán, los mazapanes. The stress does not move; the plural just no longer needs the mark.
- Words already ending in -s stay the same: el brindis, los brindis.
- Some live in the plural: las vacaciones, los Reyes Magos, las uvas of New Year’s Eve, and las fiestas meaning the holidays.

Regional words
A few of the things in the tables have other names in parts of the Spanish-speaking world:
- Turkey is pavo, the standard word and the one used in Spain; guajolote, from Nahuatl, is the Mexican word, and chompipe is used in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Wiktionary lists still more (guanajo in Cuba, pisco in Colombia), and its pages do not agree exactly on the countries: the entry for guajolote also gives Honduras and El Salvador.
- The nativity scene is belén, nacimiento or pesebre, depending on the country.
- The Christmas tree is el árbol de Navidad or el árbol navideño; Wiktionary records humisha in Peru.
- Eggnog in Mexico is rompope, a name built on ron, rum.

New Year follows Christmas, with its own words, from the twelve grapes to the chimes at midnight, in Happy New Year in Spanish.
