VERBAVIA

The 1000 most common Spanish words

Español · ranked by frequency · with English translations

Spanish is spoken by around 500 million people as a first language, more than any language except Mandarin, across Spain, almost all of Central and South America, and a large part of the United States. It is written almost exactly as it is said: five clean vowels, and a spelling system that tells you where the stress falls.

The first few hundred words carry an unusual amount of Spanish. Much of what English needs separate words for is done here by endings — hablo, hablas, habla are one word doing the work of two — so a short list goes further than the count suggests. Watch for the pairs that share a root with English but have drifted: actualmente is "currently", not "actually", and embarazada means pregnant.

How many Spanish words do you need?

How much of real Spanish the first 100, 1,000 and 10,000 words cover, measured on a large corpus of film and television dialogue: how many words do you need to speak Spanish. All seven languages are compared on one chart in which language has the steepest frequency curve. The hundred words said most of all, verb forms and all, are explained one by one in the 100 most common Spanish words.
