VERBAVIA

The 1000 most common French words

Français · ranked by frequency · with English translations

French is an official language in 29 countries and the everyday language of France, much of Belgium and Switzerland, Québec, and a wide band of West and Central Africa — where most of its speakers now live. It shares a great deal of vocabulary with English, thanks to 1066, which makes reading it far easier than hearing it.

The gap between the written and the spoken word is the whole difficulty of French, and it starts early: parle, parles and parlent are spelt differently and said identically. Nouns carry a gender that the article shows and the noun usually does not, so it is worth learning le or la as part of the word rather than as a fact about it.
