VERBAVIA

The 1000 most common Portuguese words

Português (Brasil) · ranked by frequency · with English translations

Portuguese is the language of some 260 million people: Brazil above all, then Portugal, Angola, Mozambique and several smaller nations. This list follows Brazilian usage, which is what the overwhelming majority of learners will meet and hear.

Portuguese looks like Spanish on the page and sounds nothing like it. The vowels are the work: nasal ones that English has no equivalent for, and unstressed ones that reduce almost to nothing. Learn the words with their gender, and be careful with the false friends that Spanish gives you for free and Portuguese takes back — exquisito is not esquisito, which means strange.

Verbavia teaches these words in this order, with the grammar that holds them together, stories built from words you already know, and spaced review that brings each one back before you forget it. One lesson a day, free.

The list

Ordered by how often each word actually occurs in ordinary use, so the words near the top are the ones you will meet first and hardest.

This page lists the first 1000 of 4573 words in the Portuguese frequency list.
