VERBAVIA

The 1000 most common German words

Deutsch · ranked by frequency · with English translations

German is the most widely spoken first language in the European Union — about 95 million speakers across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and parts of Belgium and Italy. It is closely related to English, and the family resemblance is obvious in the commonest words: Wasser, Haus, Buch, trinken.

Two things make German vocabulary different from a Romance language's. Nouns have one of three genders and are capitalised wherever they appear, so learning a noun means learning der, die or das with it. And compounds are built freely and read left to right, so a long word you have never seen is often two or three words you already know, stacked.

Verbavia teaches these words in this order, with the grammar that holds them together, stories built from words you already know, and spaced review that brings each one back before you forget it. One lesson a day, free.

The list

Ordered by how often each word actually occurs in ordinary use, so the words near the top are the ones you will meet first and hardest.

This page lists the first 1000 of 5000 words in the German frequency list.
