VERBAVIA

The 1000 most common Māori words

Te Reo Māori · ranked by frequency · with English translations

Te reo Māori is an official language of New Zealand and the language of the tangata whenua. After a long decline it is in active revitalisation, taught in schools and heard daily in broadcasting, with something over 150,000 speakers of conversational fluency or better.

The sound system is small and very regular — five vowels, each with a short and a long form marked by a macron, and every syllable ending in a vowel. The macron is not decoration: keke is cake and kēkē is armpit. Vocabulary is built with a small set of particles doing work that English does with word endings, so the commonest words on this list are grammatical rather than nouns.
