VERBAVIA

The 1000 most common Italian words

Italiano · ranked by frequency · with English translations

Italian is spoken by around 65 million people, chiefly in Italy, San Marino, Vatican City and southern Switzerland, with long-established communities in Argentina, the United States and Australia. Of the major Romance languages it is the closest to Latin, and the most consistently phonetic — once you know the rules, you can read aloud a word you have never seen.

Italian rewards the first thousand words more than most languages, because so much of ordinary conversation is built from a small set of very frequent verbs used in idioms. The difficulty arrives later, with the double consonants that change meaning — capelli is hair, cappelli is hats — and with a spoken past tense that varies sharply between north and south.
